Priorities in Life

Filed Under:

Some conclusions I drew from the movie, The Aviator.

It's amazing that multi-millionaire, Howard Hughes, appeared to have it all - money, fame, women, success - but it didn't seem to bring him genuine happiness as he had a life fraught with problems, such as poor mental health, broken marriages, and legal battles. It really brings home to me that these things don't bring happiness but that we have a need to find meaning in our life, which you could call a spiritual need. In fact that thought is borne out in this wise man's words.

An Online Pasifika

Filed Under:

'I have a dream. A dream of a land where, men of all races, of all nationalities, and all creeds will sit together at the table of brotherhood' - Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King was pushing for equality when he uttered those famous words and it really does echo well the struggle for equality of the Pasifika languages on the internet. That is one major issue that I will be addressing during my stay in Auckland.
It is really encouraging to see that the government in its 'Digital Strategy' is intent on providing funding for the creation of websites with Pasifika language content. Our software, Tuku, is designed for just such a purpose and was the motivation behind our translating Plone into Maori, Samoan, and Tongan. Here's hoping local government and community groups will use Tuku to create Pasifika language websites; after all it's free!

A Lovely Day

Filed Under:

Miho & I spent a 'special day' together.

We try to regularly set aside a day just for us, though, it has been about a month since we last had one. We started off by doing some shopping at Dressmart, where Miho bought 3 items and I bought 1. From there we went to Mt Eden, where we paused for a coffee and pancakes at Frasers. Then it was on to Auckland city for a browse, topped off by dinner at 'The Koreans' - an absolute must for fans of Korean BBQ. Incidentally I must express thanks to the Morita family for generously shouting us dinner.
